Use
The Aspergillus Antibodies by Complement Fixation and Immunodiffusion test aids in the diagnosis of allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) and aspergilloma. The test involves determining the presence of antibodies against Aspergillus species in the patient through complement fixation and immunodiffusion techniques. The presence of Aspergillus antibodies suggests either an active infection or exposure to the fungus, helping clinicians in diagnosing the condition and differentiating from other possible pulmonary issues.
Special Instructions
Parallel testing is preferred, and convalescent specimens should be received within 30 days from receipt of acute specimens. Mark specimens plainly as 'acute' or 'convalescent.'
Limitations
A titer of 1:8 or greater suggests Aspergillus infection or allergy, but cross-reactions with dimorphic fungi within the genus Aspergillus are not unusual. The presence of bands in immunodiffusion suggests recent or previous Aspergillus infection. However, no antibodies detected in immunodiffusion does not exclude Aspergillus infection, thereby affecting the sensitivity of the test. The test uses pooled mycelial-phase culture filtrates of multiple Aspergillus species, potentially impacting specificity.
