Special Instructions
The test involves a two-step process where the initial electrophoresis could reflex to immunofixation (IFE) at an additional charge if an M-spike is detected. Testing schedules may vary, and additional time may be required for confirmatory reflex tests.
Limitations
The test primarily assesses the protein composition in serum and may not detect all protein abnormalities. It may not provide complete information about the cause of the detected protein abnormalities, necessitating further clinical evaluation. Hemolysis or using plasma instead of serum could lead to rejection of the specimen.
