Allergen, Food, Avocado
Also known as: AVOCADO
Use
The Allergen, Food, Avocado test is designed to measure specific IgE antibodies in serum and is utilized in the diagnosis of allergic reactions to avocados. This quantitative assessment aids healthcare providers in determining the likelihood of an IgE-mediated allergic reaction in patients with a suspected avocado allergy. Correlation of allergy laboratory results with clinical history and in vivo reactivity to specific allergens is essential for accurate diagnosis, as the presence of specific IgE may not correlate with the degree of clinical response or skin testing results when challenged with a specific allergen.
Special Instructions
For accurate results, serum should be separated from cells as soon as possible, or within 2 hours of collection. It is recommended to transfer 0.5 mL of serum to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube. Multiple patient encounters should be avoided to ensure optimal testing conditions. For multiple allergen orders, refer to the 'Allergen Specimen Collection Instructions' provided by ARUP Laboratories.
Limitations
Results from the Allergen, Food, Avocado test may not fully determine the clinical relevance of the IgE levels detected, as concentrations of allergen-specific IgE may not correlate with the severity of allergic response. Even at low levels (0.10-0.34 kU/L), the clinical relevance is undetermined and intended for specialist use. It is important to note that a negative test result does not entirely rule out the presence of a clinical allergy or anaphylaxis, and must be interpreted in the context of the patient's clinical symptoms and history.
