Allergen Profile, Latex-related
Use
The Allergen Profile, Latex-related test is employed to assess the likelihood of allergic reactions in individuals who have an allergy to latex and may also have sensitivity to certain foods such as banana, kiwi, avocado, and chestnut. This test is particularly useful for diagnosing oral allergy syndrome (OAS), a condition characterized by localized allergic reactions in the mouth and throat when consuming certain fresh fruits and vegetables. It aids in differentiating between OAS symptoms and more severe, systemic allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis.
Special Instructions
This test uses the Thermo Fisher ImmunoCAP® methodology. Specimens must be properly labeled to avoid rejection, and care should be taken to prevent gross hemolysis. Minimum volume requirements need to be adhered to, as insufficient volume will not allow for repeat testing.
Limitations
The test is specific to the allergens included in the panel: avocado, banana, chestnut, kiwi, and latex. It may not detect all possible allergens that could trigger allergic reactions in individuals with latex sensitivity. Moreover, results should be interpreted alongside clinical findings and additional testing if necessary.
