Allergen, Food, Peanut Components IgE
Also known as: PEANUT COM
Use
The test measures the concentration of IgE antibodies specific to peanut proteins in the patient's serum. It identifies potential allergens associated with systemic allergic reactions, like anaphylaxis, when exposed to peanuts. The presence of IgE antibodies indicates sensitization, which may correlate with allergic responses, although this does not always match the clinical outcome or skin test results. It is crucial for specialists to evaluate the results alongside clinical history and in vivo reactivity to specific allergens.
Special Instructions
Patient preparation involves avoiding multiple patient encounters. The collection involves using an SST tube, and specimens should be processed to separate serum within two hours of collection. Multiple specimen tubes should be avoided, and all available specimens must be included.
Limitations
The test results of 0.10-0.34 kU/L for whole peanut are intended for specialist interpretation as the clinical relevance is undetermined. There is variability in how increasing concentrations of allergen-specific IgE reflect allergic responses, and these concentrations may not correlate with skin testing results. A negative test does not rule out clinical allergy or anaphylaxis.
