Antimicrobial Susceptibility - MIC, Individual
Also known as: MA MIC
Use
The test determines the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of a requested antimicrobial agent against a submitted bacterial isolate. MIC is crucial for determining the lowest concentration of an antibiotic that will inhibit the in vitro growth of an infectious organism. Reporting the MIC provides clinicians with precise information regarding the degree of susceptibility of an infectious organism, aiding in the selection of the most appropriate antibiotic therapy based on the organism's susceptibility, the infection site, and the antibiotic's pharmacology.
Special Instructions
Specimen must be an actively growing isolate in pure culture. Transport in a sealed container with pure culture on an agar slant or in bacterial transport media. Isolate identification and specimen source required. Specify individual antibiotics to be tested. Additional processing fee applies for non-pure cultures and for species identification if not initially provided.
Limitations
This test is limited to the antibiotics requested and specified by the ordering physician. Mixed cultures or nonviable organisms are unacceptable. Transport must comply with the guidelines for potentially infectious substances if applicable. Interpretation relies on the CLSI guidelines and meaningful results depend upon accurate organism identification and pure culture submission.
