Use
This test is useful in the assessment of chronic exposure to cadmium and determination of the cadmium body burden. In chronic exposures, the kidneys are the primary target organ, and urine cadmium concentrations can be indicative of cadmium toxicity. Symptoms vary based on exposure route and include tubular proteinuria, fever, headache, dyspnea, chest pain, conjunctivitis, rhinitis, sore throat, and cough. Ingestion of high concentrations of cadmium may cause vomiting, diarrhea, salivation, cramps, and abdominal pain.
Special Instructions
Patients should discontinue nutritional supplements, vitamins, minerals, and nonessential over-the-counter medications before specimen collection upon physician advice. Abstinence from iodine-containing medications or contrast agents is recommended for at least one month prior to specimen collection for accurate elemental testing results.
Limitations
Elevated cadmium results may arise from skin or collection-related contamination, such as using non-trace element-free containers. If contamination is suspected, a second specimen collected in trace element-free containers should confirm results. High iodine concentrations may interfere with elemental tests.

Collection Instructions
Collect random urine. Avoid urine collection within 48 hours post gadolinium or iodine-containing contrast media use.
