Chorionic Villus, FISH
Also known as: FISHCVS
Use
The test is used for rapid detection of aneuploidy involving chromosomes X, Y, 13, 18, and 21. It provides critical prenatal information, especially in cases where there is an increased risk of chromosomal abnormalities due to factors such as abnormal cell-free DNA results or increased nuchal translucency. Since it targets common aneuploidies, the information it provides can assist in making important clinical decisions about pregnancy management.
Special Instructions
This test requires the use of the Cytogenetic test request form 43097 and should be ordered through the ARUP interface. It also requires the submission of the Prenatal Cytogenetics Patient History Form alongside the electronic packing list. Counseling and informed consent are recommended for genetic testing, especially for New York clients, where consent is required.
Limitations
This FISH analysis does not rule out aneuploidy of chromosomes other than 13, 18, 21, X, and Y. It will not detect structural abnormalities or mosaicism and cannot provide structural information for detected gains. Interphase FISH analysis assumes that fetal chromosome complements are represented accurately by extra-embryonic tissue, which may not always be the case. Maternal cell contamination can also interfere with results.
