Cryoglobulin, Qualitative
Also known as: CRYGB
Use
This test aids in the evaluation of patients with conditions such as vasculitis, macroglobulinemia, or multiple myeloma, where symptoms occur with cold exposure. The presence of cryoglobulins usually indicates certain plasma cell and lymphoproliferative disorders. They may also be found in collagen vascular diseases, hepatitis C infection, and other infections like infectious mononucleosis and cytomegalovirus disease. Low levels of cryoglobulins can be present in otherwise healthy individuals.
Special Instructions
Proper collection and transport of the specimen is critical to the test outcome. Patients must fast overnight or for a minimum of 8 hours before the specimen is collected. The blood should be drawn into a prewarmed plain red tube, and the serum must be separated from cells within 1 hour of collection.
Limitations
Submitting serum quantities less than 3 mL may affect the sensitivity of the test. Plasma and serum separator tubes, as well as grossly hemolyzed or lipemic specimens, are unsuitable for testing.
