Cytokeratin 5,6 (CK 5,6) by Immunohistochemistry
Also known as: CYTO56 IHC
Use
Cytokeratin 5,6 analysis by immunohistochemistry is useful for identifying and differentiating certain subtypes of epithelial tumors. The presence of these cytokeratins can be indicative of specific tumor origins, helping in histopathological diagnosis and management decisions for cancer patients.
Special Instructions
This test is performed as a stain and return (technical) service only. Submit an electronic request or use ARUP Immunohistochemistry Stain Form (#32978) if electronic ordering is unavailable. Include the ARUP client number. Use ARUP supply #47808 for tissue transport.
Limitations
The test is limited to stained slide analysis and does not provide a quantitative assessment of cytokeratin 5,6 expression levels. It requires formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded tissue or cell block specimens, as the methodology cannot be applied to fresh, frozen, or inadequately preserved samples. Excessive heat exposure during storage or transport may compromise specimen integrity.
