Fungal Antibodies by Immunodiffusion
Also known as: FUNG PPT
Use
The Fungal Antibodies by Immunodiffusion test is used to detect the presence of antibodies to various fungi, including Aspergillus, Coccidioides, Histoplasma, and Blastomyces. This test is useful as a component of diagnostic assessments for potential fungal infections. The presence of antibodies may suggest a current or past infection. However, it is not recommended as a sole diagnostic tool for active infections, as similar antibody profiles can result from different fungal exposures.
Special Instructions
Parallel testing is preferred, and convalescent specimens must be received within 30 days from receipt of the acute specimens. Mark specimens plainly as "acute" or "convalescent."
Limitations
This test is not recommended as a sole method for the diagnosis of fungal infections due to the possibility of cross-reactivity with unrelated fungal antibodies. Interfering substances in the samples can lead to indeterminate results. Negative results do not rule out the presence of fungal infection.
