Fungal Stain, KOH with Calcofluor White
Also known as: CWP-KOH
Use
The Fungal Stain, KOH with Calcofluor White test is used for the identification of fungi such as yeast and hyphal elements in clinical specimens. It assists in diagnosing fungal infections by detecting the presence of fungal elements. The test is crucial for guiding effective fungal infection management and treatment decisions.
Special Instructions
Collect corneal or skin scrapings, hair, nail clippings, respiratory specimens, or unground tissue in a sterile container. It's preferred to mention the specimen source. Avoid collecting swabs, blood, bone marrow, or specimens submitted in gauze as these are unacceptable.
Limitations
A negative stain result does not exclude the possibility of a fungal infection. False negatives may occur due to sampling errors or a low number of organisms in the specimen. Thus, a negative result should not be the sole basis for ruling out fungal infections, and clinical correlation is required.
