HBV Exposure Panel
Also known as: HBV EXP
Use
The HBV Exposure Panel is a recommended triple panel test to screen for current or past hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. This test detects HBV surface antigen (HBsAg), HBV surface antibody (anti-HBs, quantitative), and HBV core total antibodies (anti-HBc total). It provides important diagnostic information for assessing HBV exposure, immunity, and infection status. This panel is crucial in understanding the patient's history of HBV exposure and determining if immunity is present, either through past infection or vaccination.
Special Instructions
HBsAb results greater than 1,000.00 IU/L are reported as greater than 1,000.00 IU/L. If results for HBsAg screen are repeatedly reactive with an index value between 1.00 and 50.00, then HBsAg Confirmation will be added. Additional charges apply. The test is New York state approved, but cannot be used for blood donor screening or related protocols.
Limitations
This assay should not be used for blood donor screening, associated re-entry protocols, or for screening Human Cells, Tissues and Cellular and Tissue-Based Products (HCT/P). False positives can occur, particularly in the HBV core total assay. The test does not differentiate between IgG and IgM antibodies in the HBV core total assay, which can result in an ambiguous interpretation of recent versus remote infection.
