Hepatitis B Virus Core Antibody, IgM
Also known as: HBCABM
Use
The Hepatitis B Virus Core Antibody, IgM test is utilized to determine the presence of IgM antibodies against the core antigen of the Hepatitis B virus. This is typically an indication of acute or recent infection with Hepatitis B, as IgM antibodies are produced early in the infection cycle. It is especially useful in diagnosing acute hepatitis B infection when used as part of an acute hepatitis panel including HAV IgM, HBV surface antigen, and HCV antibody. A positive result may indicate a recent Hepatitis B infection and suggests that the patient could be in a potentially infectious state.
Special Instructions
This assay should not be used for blood donor screening, associated reentry protocols, or for screening human cells, tissues, and cellular- and tissue-based products (HCT/P). The test can be ordered as part of the acute hepatitis panel to determine if the patient has an acute HBV infection.
Limitations
The test has specific limitations in that it should not be used for screening blood donors or for the associated reentry protocols. It is also not suitable for screening human cells, tissues, and cellular- and tissue-based products (HCT/P). Special attention should be given to the stability of the specimen post-collection to ensure accurate results.
