Hepatitis Delta Virus Antibody
Also known as: HEP D AB
Use
The Hepatitis Delta Virus (HDV) Antibody test is designed to screen for and help diagnose HDV infection in patients with documented acute or chronic Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) infection. It is particularly useful for identifying HDV infection in those who are at increased risk due to HBV. The test detects the presence of total antibodies (IgG and IgM) to the hepatitis Delta agent, aiding in the distinction between HDV co-infection or superinfection with hepatitis B. HDV infection can lead to severe liver disease, hence timely diagnosis is crucial for management and treatment.
Special Instructions
This test is intended for patients with existing HBV infection. It is important to note that HDV antibody testing with reflex to molecular testing is available as a separate order under a different test code. Specimen collection should be done using recommended tubes and handled appropriately to ensure accuracy of results.
Limitations
The test has not been cleared or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) but is developed and characterized by ARUP Laboratories in a CLIA certified environment, and is intended for clinical purposes. The occurrence of equivocal results necessitates retesting after a week to confirm if there is a change in antibody levels or confirm a false positive result. Specimens should be free of microbial contamination and not be hemolyzed or lipemic for accurate results.
