Insulin Antibody
Also known as: ANTI-INS
Use
This assay is intended for the semi-quantitative determination of antibodies to endogenous insulin or antibodies to exogenous insulin in human serum. Antibodies to exogenous insulin therapies may be detected using this method. The presence of antibodies can be indicative of autoimmune diabetes mellitus (DM), but the magnitude of the result is not related to disease progression. Therefore, results should be interpreted within the context of clinical symptoms.
Special Instructions
Testing is not recommended for patients receiving insulin for more than two weeks, as insulin antibody formation may occur. For the determination of autoimmune diabetes mellitus, at least two antibody tests should be performed, and in most cases, the glutamic acid decarboxylase antibody test is used in combination with another antibody test. Other recommended tests include Islet Antigen-2 (IA-2) Autoantibody, Glutamic Acid Decarboxylase Antibody, Islet Cell Cytoplasmic Antibody, IgG, and Zinc Transporter 8 Antibody.
Limitations
The test cannot be used to differentiate type 1 diabetes mellitus from type 2 diabetes mellitus in most cases. The presence of antibodies can occur due to the formation of antibodies against exogenous insulin therapies and may not necessarily indicate disease progression. Moreover, plasma samples and hemolyzed or lipemic specimens are unacceptable, which may limit the conditions under which the test can be performed.
