Little s Antigen Typing - Patient
Also known as: S LITTLEAG
Use
The test determines the presence of the little s (MNS4) antigen on the patient's red blood cells. This antigen is part of the MNS blood group system and can affect blood transfusion compatibility. Detecting the antigen can help in identifying the antigenic profile of red blood cells, which is crucial for blood matching in transfusions to prevent immune reactions.
Special Instructions
To ascertain if the patient is heterozygous or homozygous for the s antigen, it is recommended to also order the S Antigen Typing - Patient (2007739).
Limitations
The test identifies the presence or absence of the little s antigen on red blood cells but does not quantify antigen levels. It cannot determine antibody status. Results may be influenced by recent transfusions, causing mixed-field agglutination. Proper specimen handling is crucial as a frozen or improperly preserved sample may yield inaccurate results.
