Oncology FISH Analysis - AML1/ETO(RUNX1/RUNX1T1): t(8;21) [AML]
Use
Oncology FISH Analysis - AML1/ETO (RUNX1/RUNX1T1): t (8;21) [AML] is a Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH) test designed to detect a common chromosomal inversion associated with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). AML is a type of leukemia that predominantly affects adults, arising from undifferentiated white blood cells that originate in the bone marrow. The test specifically assesses for the t(8;21) translocation and gene fusion between chromosomes 8 and 21, which is linked to a favorable prognosis and is present in 7-12% of AML cases. Interpretation ofresults must always consider the overall clinical context and should not be used in isolation for the diagnosis of AML.
Special Instructions
Specimens can be submitted using sodium heparin tubes. The test is intended for patients with either a clinical or suspected AML diagnosis, or for those needing prognostic identification. Moreover, it can assist in cases where prior cytogenetic tests have failed. Monitoring treatment responses is also a significant reasoning for conducting this analysis. Collecting the right specimen and adhering to proper shipping protocols is essential for accurate results, and any failure in these areas could lead to misinterpretation of results. Therefore, it's imperative to follow the outlined collection methods exactly.
Limitations
The FISH assay focuses on detecting additions, deletions, and rearrangements involving the RUNX1 and RUNX1T1 loci. It does not have the capability to identify translocations involving other partner chromosomes that may also be relevant in the context of AML. Therefore, its utility is limited to these specific alterations, and other potential abnormalities may go undetected.
