Use
Evaluate hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and pituitary ACTH reserve. 11-Deoxycortisol is the immediate precursor of cortisol and follows the same catabolic pathways as cortisol.
Special Instructions
For metyrapone testing details, refer to the Metyrapone Stimulation section of the Endocrine Appendix. Serum/plasma must be separated from cells within 45 minutes of venipuncture, and the specimen should be sent in a plastic transport tube.
Limitations
Turnaround time may vary and additional time should be allowed for confirmatory or reflex tests. The reliability of results depends on proper specimen handling and adherence to collection requirements stated. Inaccuracies may occur if the specimen is not separated from cells within the specified time or if the specimen undergoes more than three freeze/thaw cycles.
