Allergen Profile, Food−Citrus
Use
The Allergen Profile, Food−Citrus is designed to aid in the detection of specific IgE antibodies to a variety of citrus allergens including grapefruit, lemon, lime, orange, and tangerine. This test can help identify allergies to these specific citrus fruits, which may be causing allergic reactions. By identifying the presence of IgE antibodies, healthcare providers can better manage and treat allergic conditions related to these foods, including recommending dietary changes or treatments to alleviate symptoms.
Special Instructions
The test requires a serum specimen, which should be collected using a red-top tube or gel-barrier tube. Testing requires a sample volume of at least 1 mL. Proper labeling and storage are important for ensuring test accuracy. Recently administered isotopes and gross hemolysis are causes for specimen rejection.
Limitations
This test evaluates the presence of specific IgE antibodies to grapefruit, lemon, lime, orange, and tangerine only. It may not detect other allergens that could be causing symptoms. Results should be interpreted in the context of all available clinical information. False positives and negatives can occur, and the presence of IgE does not always indicate a clinical allergy. The test has not been cleared or approved by the FDA, although FDA clearance is not necessary for its clinical use.
