Allergen, Food, Grapefruit
Also known as: GRAPEFRUIT
Use
The Allergen, Food, Grapefruit test is used to measure the levels of Immunoglobulin E (IgE) specific to grapefruit allergens in the blood. This test aids in the diagnosis of food allergies to grapefruit, which can cause adverse clinical reactions. It helps determine the presence of allergen-specific IgE antibodies, which are indicative of sensitization to grapefruit and help in assessing the potential risk of allergic reactions, ranging from mild symptoms to severe anaphylaxis.
Special Instructions
For accurate results, it is important to follow the specimen collection instructions carefully. Patients should avoid multiple encounters with grapefruit before the test. Serum should be separated from cells as soon as possible or within 2 hours of collection. Proper sample handling and transportation must be ensured to prevent rejection.
Limitations
The presence and concentration of allergen-specific IgE identified by this test may not correlate directly with the extent or severity of the clinical response when exposed to grapefruit allergens. A negative result does not completely rule out an allergy or potential severe allergic reactions, such as anaphylaxis. It's essential to correlate laboratory results with clinical history and other diagnostic findings. The clinical relevance of IgE levels between 0.10-0.34 kU/L is undetermined and should be interpreted by specialists.
