F209-IgE Grapefruit
Use
The IgE grapefruit test measures the specific IgE antibodies to grapefruit in the patient's serum. This test is used to assess possible allergic reactions to grapefruit, which can manifest in symptoms such as itching, hives, or anaphylaxis upon consumption of the fruit. It helps in the diagnostic evaluation of patients with suspected food allergies, providing valuable information for allergists to guide dietary recommendations and treatment strategies.
Special Instructions
The test requires the collection of 1 mL serum, which should be stored in either a red-top tube or a gel-barrier tube. Stability conditions are critical to preservereliability: maintain room temperature for up to 14 days, refrigerate for 14 days, or freeze for up to three months. The sample can endure up to three freeze/thaw cycles without compromising the results. Turnaround time for results is typically 3 to 5 days from the specimen pickup date to result release.
Limitations
The IgE grapefruit test is specific to grapefruit and does not assess allergies to other citrus fruits or food groups. Cross-reactivity with other allergens is not evaluated, potentially leading to misleading results if other allergies are present. Interpretation should be made in conjunction with clinical symptoms and history, as elevated IgE levels might not directly correlate with clinical allergy symptoms. A negative result does not conclusively exclude a grapefruit allergy, and further testing or an oral food challenge might be needed if clinical suspicion persists.
