Anti-Scl-70 Ab (RDL)
Also known as: SCLER 70, topoisomerase 1
Use
The presence of anti-Scl-70 antibodies supports the diagnosis of scleroderma but does not exclude additional diagnosis, e.g., scleroderma and SLE or scleroderma and Sjogren's syndrome. Anti-Scl-70 antibodies are present in 20% of scleroderma patients irrespective of age and in the same percentage of males and females. In American patients with proximal scleroderma, anti-Scl-70 Abs are more common in African Americans than in Caucasians.
Special Instructions
To avoid delays in turnaround time when requesting multiple tests on frozen samples, please submit separate frozen specimens for each test requested.
Limitations
The detection of antibodies does not exclude other associated autoimmune conditions. A negative result does not rule out scleroderma, as anti-Scl-70 antibodies are not present in all cases. Further confirmatory tests might be required for a conclusive diagnosis.
