Broccoli
Use
The test measures specific IgE antibodies to broccoli, which can help diagnose allergic reactions in patients presenting with symptoms like itching, swelling, and difficulty breathing. Detecting IgE antibodies is crucial in identifying food allergies and guiding dietary management, providing insight into an individual's allergic profile and assisting in the development of an appropriate treatment and avoidance strategy.
Special Instructions
Ensure collection of 0.2 mL of serum using a red-top tube or gel-barrier tube. Stability requirements allow for storage at room temperature or refrigeration for up to 14 days, and frozen for up to 3 months. Specimen handling should avoid excessive freeze/thaw cycles, with a maximum of three allowed.
Limitations
The test specifically detects IgE antibodies to broccoli and may not identify other allergens or food-related immune responses. Cross-reactivity with other similar allergens is possible and should be considered in interpreting results. False negatives can occur if IgE levels are below the detection threshold, or if the patient has not been recently exposed to the allergen, leading to lower antibody production. Additional confirmatory testing or clinical correlation may be necessary in cases of suspected allergy despite a negative result.
