Budgerigar Feather
Also known as: Parakeet Feather, Parrot Feather
Use
This test measures the levels of specific IgE antibodies to Budgerigar feathers in the serum. These antibodies are an indicator of allergic sensitization and potential allergic diseases related to exposure to Budgerigar feathers. The test aids in diagnosing allergic reactions and helps in the management of patients suspected to be allergic to Budgerigar feathers, which are common allergens for individuals sensitive to parakeet and parrot feathers.
Special Instructions
The test requires a serum specimen collected in a red-top or gel-barrier tube. It is crucial to follow storage instructions carefully to ensure the stability of the sample. The serum can be kept at room temperature or refrigerated for up to 14 days and frozen for up to 3 months, stable through three freeze/thaw cycles. Ensure timely submission of the specimen to maintain result accuracy.
Limitations
The test is specific for Budgerigar feather IgE and won't detect other allergens or sources of IgE. Cross-reactivity with other allergens is possible, potentially leading to false positives or negatives. It is important to consider clinical history and symptoms alongside test results. The decision on allergic avoidance or treatments should be based on the overall clinical context beyond test outcomes.
