Chromosome Analysis, Tissue Biopsies (Products of Conception, Skin)
Also known as: Long-term Culture, Fibroblast Karyotype Study, Placental Tissue Chromosome Analysis, Spontaneous Abortion Chromosome Analysis, Tissue Karyotype
Use
Evaluate possible chromosomal abnormalities as the cause of miscarriage. Extended study of mosaicism found in blood chromosome analysis.
Special Instructions
Please include clinical information, previous cytogenetic report or karyotype. If prior Cell-free DNA/NIPT studies have been performed, include a copy of the report. Contact the laboratory for specific collection instructions especially concerning optimal tissue types such as placental villi. For further information or clarification, call 800-345-4363. FISH can also be ordered on fixed specimens with the Fluorescence in situ Hybridization (FISH), Paraffin Block test.
Limitations
Some products of conception may only contain maternal tissue which might affect test accuracy. Additionally, subtle chromosomal rearrangements below the resolution of cytogenetic methods or congenital anomalies caused by non-chromosomal factors will not be detected by this test. Tissue viability could be compromised in conditions where fetal tissue is not viable; hence results must be carefully interpreted in the context of clinical findings and other diagnostic tests.

Container
Submit biopsies in a sterile tube with sterile Ringer's lactate, Hanks' balanced salt solution or Labcorp transport medium.
Collection Instructions
Aseptically obtain a small piece of tissue with subepidermal layers. Best results are obtained from placental villi, which remain viable much longer than fetal tissue. Ensure aseptic collection to avoid contamination with maternal tissue.
Storage Instructions
Refrigerate. Do not freeze.
Causes for Rejection
Gross contamination, necrotic tissue, and specimen in fix cannot be processed.
