Hemoglobin (Hb) Solubility
Also known as: Hb S, Hemoglobin S, Hgb Solubility, Sickle Cell Preparation, Sickle Cell Solubility Test
Use
Qualitative determination of presence of hemoglobin S; detect sickling hemoglobins; evaluate hemolytic anemia, undiagnosed hereditary anemia with morphologic (sickle-like) abnormalities on peripheral blood smear
Special Instructions
For accurate results, submit a separate lavender-top tube for each test requiring a lavender-top tube to avoid delays in turnaround time. This test is not suitable for neonates or children under six months of age as hemoglobin S levels do not stabilize until after six months.
Limitations
The Hemoglobin (Hb) Solubility test may yield false-positive results due to polycythemic blood, hyperglobulinemia, or various abnormal hemoglobins such as Hemoglobin I, Bart, CGeorgetown, Alexandra, CHarlem, Porto Alegre, Memphis/S, CZiguinchor, and STravis. Hemoglobin fractionation should confirm positive tests. False-negative results can occur with inadequate blood quantities, high Hb F levels, or certain medications. The presence of hemoglobin S is genetically delayed and may be undetectable in newborns or post-transfusion patients. Solubility tests are unreliable in children younger than six months.
