Heparin-dependent Platelet Antibody (Serotonin Release Assay)
Also known as: Functional HIT Assay
Use
Confirmatory assay used in the evaluation of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT)
Special Instructions
Transfer serum to a plastic transport tube. To avoid delays in turnaround time when requesting multiple tests on frozen samples, submit separate frozen specimens for each test requested.
Limitations
The diagnosis of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia should not rely solely on the results of the Heparin-dependent Platelet Antibody assay, but must also include the results of the immunologic HIT assay and other clinical indicators like the presence and timing of thrombocytopenia relative to heparin administration. The presence of thrombosis or other HIT-related sequelae and other potential causes of thrombosis should also be considered.
