Human Immunodeficiency Virus 1 (HIV-1), Quantitative, Real-time PCR (Nongraphical) With Reflex to PhenoSense Integrase®
Also known as: HIV-1 Plasma Viremia, HIV-1 RNA by Real-time (RT) PCR, Quantitative, Raltegravir, Reflex to PhenoSense Integrase®, Viral Load
Use
Detect and quantitate HIV-1 in plasma with reflex to phenotype (at additional charge) if viral load is >500 copies/mL.
Special Instructions
Specimens must be collected in lavender-top (EDTA) or PPT™ tubes, centrifuged within six hours, and the plasma transferred and frozen in screw-cap polypropylene tubes. Separate frozen samples are required for different assays to avoid delays in turnaround time.
Limitations
The assay has a quantification range of 20 to 10,000,000 copies/mL. Plasma specimens should not be collected in green-top (heparin) tubes or shipped in 'pop-top' or 'snap-cap' tubes, as these may lead to specimen rejection. Inadequate sample volumes (less than 4 mL) and hemolysis are also causes for rejection.

Collection Instructions
Collect specimen in lavender-top (EDTA) or PPT™ tubes. Do not use green-top (heparin) tubes. Centrifuge specimen within six hours of collection. Remove plasma and transfer to screw-cap polypropylene transport tubes. Freeze and ship frozen. If PPT™ is used, ensure plasma is transferred to screw-cap tubes before freezing.
Storage Instructions
Freeze for long-term storage. Sample is stable at room temperature for one day, refrigerated for five days.
Causes for Rejection
Hemolysis; green-top (heparin) tube; specimen received in 'pop-top' or 'snap-cap' tube; quantity not sufficient for analysis; frozen PPT™
