Human Immunodeficiency Virus 1 (HIV-1) by Quantitative NAAT with Reflex to HIV-1 Drug Resistance by Next Generation Sequencing
Also known as: HIV QT GR
Use
This test is used to detect and quantify HIV-1 RNA in plasma, which aids in the clinical management of HIV-1 infected patients. It helps assess patient prognosis by measuring the baseline HIV-1 RNA levels and monitors the effects of antiretroviral therapy by observing changes in these levels. The test also determines HIV-1 drug resistance using DNA sequencing, which informs treatment decisions to improve therapy outcomes.
Special Instructions
The test requires the collection of plasma, which should be separated from cells within 24 hours and transferred to a standard transport tube. It is important to ship the sample in a frozen state. The commercial pathways include clinical, provider-ordered, and institution/client-billed options, with additional charges applicable if the reflex testing to HIV-1 Drug Resistance by Next Generation Sequencing is performed.
Limitations
The test should not be used for blood donor screening, associated reentry protocols, or for screening human cells, tissues, and cellular- or tissue-based products (HCT/P). A result of 'Not Detected' does not rule out the presence of inhibitors or an HIV-1 RNA concentration below the detection level. The performance characteristics depend on factors such as patient adherence, percentage of resistant virus population, dosing, and drug pharmacology.
