Kaolin Clotting Time (KCT)
Use
The KCT is a sensitive screening test of lupus anticoagulants (LA) in patients with a history of thrombosis.6-10
Special Instructions
Not provided.
Limitations
The KCT may be prolonged in the presence of therapeutic plasma heparin or coagulation factor deficiencies (except factors VII and XIII). Platelet‑poor plasma must be used; platelet contamination impairs sensitivity for lupus anticoagulants. Additionally, no single assay can identify all lupus anticoagulants due to antibody heterogeneity.
