Legionella pneumophila Urinary Antigen
Use
Confirm the diagnosis of Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 infection
Special Instructions
The test is designed specifically for detecting Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1, which is responsible for a large majority of Legionella infections. The availability of this urinary antigen test means a respiratory specimen is not required, facilitating diagnosis when patients cannot produce sputum.
Limitations
This test will not detect species or serogroups other than Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1. Consequently, Legionnaires' disease caused by other serogroups or species may not be identified using this test alone. Culture or DFA methods are necessary for a comprehensive diagnosis of Legionella infections, as they can detect a broader range of species and serogroups. The test relies on the presence of antigen in urine, which may not be present in early stages for some individuals.
