Lipid Panel With Apolipoprotein B (ApoB)
Use
This "Extended Lipid Panel" quantifies the components of a typical lipid panel (TC, HDL-C and TG) along with ApoB by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy using the Vantera NMR Clinical Analyzer. Results from the Extended Lipid Panel Assay can be used by physicians to assist in CVD risk assessment. The principal protein component of LDL particles, ApoB, has been shown to be associated with CVD and is also an important CVD risk factor.
Special Instructions
Patient fasting is not required; however, for conditions where triglyceride values are diagnostic, such as familial hypercholesterolemia, early-onset heart disease, pancreatitis, or confirming hypertriglyceridemia, patients should be counseled to fast 12 to 14 hours before the blood draw. Ensure all specimens are centrifuged by the client before shipping to maintain sample integrity.
Limitations
If triglyceride levels exceed 800 mg/dL, LDL cholesterol cannot be calculated. The test was developed and its performance characteristics determined by Labcorp but it has not been FDA-cleared or approved. The NMR method is not influenced by endogenous glycerol, unlike the routine chemical method, which might affect results in rare conditions like Hyperglycerolemia.

Volume
1 mL
Minimum Volume
0.5 mL
Container
Spun NMR LipoTube (preferred); serum from a plain red-top tube, plasma from a lavender-top (EDTA-no gel) or green-top (heparin-no gel) tube
Collection Instructions
Collect specimen in NMR LipoTube (black-and-yellow-top tube). Gently invert tube 8-10 times to mix contents, allow serum to clot for 30 minutes at room temperature prior to centrifugation. Centrifuge specimen within two hours of collection to separate serum/plasma from red cells.
Patient Preparation
Patient fasting is not required; however, in certain conditions fasting for 12-14 hours before blood draw is recommended.
Storage Instructions
Refrigerate.
Causes for Rejection
Unspun specimens; plasma/serum contaminated with red cells; citrated plasma (light blue-top tube); gross hemolysis; specimen received in gel-barrier collection tube other than the LipoTube
