Nicotine/Cotinine, Screen and Confirmation, Urine
Use
Detect use of nicotine products.
Special Instructions
The initial screening is conducted using immunoassay techniques, and any positive results are further confirmed using mass spectrometry. It is essential to maintain the specimen at room temperature during transport but refrigerate if there is a delay beyond seven days to ensure the integrity of the sample.
Limitations
This test primarily detects cotinine and may not detect nicotine itself or other minor metabolites. The test may produce false negatives if the nicotine metabolites are present in concentrations below the detection limit. Environmental exposure to nicotine, such as tobacco smoke from other individuals, could contribute to the test results, potentially causing a positive outcome unrelated to direct nicotine use by the individual tested.
