Oxcarbazepine, Serum or Plasma
Also known as: GP 47680, Trileptal®
Use
Oxcarbazepine is an antiepileptic drug, indicated for use as monotherapy or adjunctive therapy in the treatment of partial seizures in adults with epilepsy. It is used in adjunctive therapy in epileptic children between the ages of four and 16.
Special Instructions
The use of gel-barrier tubes is not recommended due to slow absorption of oxcarbazepine by the gel, which may result in clinically significant decreases in drug concentration. Serum or plasma should be transferred to a plastic transport tube after separation.
Limitations
Clinically significant hyponatremia, defined as sodium levels below 125 mmol/L, can occur during oxcarbazepine treatment, typically within the first three months. Co-administration with other antiepileptic drugs such as carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital, or primidone can reduce levels of MHD.
