Renin Activity, Plasma, Six Specimens
Use
The Renin Activity, Plasma, Six Specimens test is used to assess plasma renin activity as part of a multiple-specimen testing panel. It helps to diagnose hypertension-related conditions by measuring the activity of renin, an enzyme secreted by the kidneys, which plays a role in blood pressure regulation. This test involves collecting an initial baseline tube and additional specimens post-treatment to evaluate the renin activity changes and assess the body's response to treatment. The measurement of renin activity can assist in determining the cause of high blood pressure and deciding the appropriate treatment strategy.
Special Instructions
This test is part of a series panel that requires multiple tubes drawn at different times following baseline and treatment procedures. Ensure the clinician orders the correct sequence and confirm the need for this series panel by contacting the ordering provider. Refer to the Endocrine Appendix of the LabCorp Directory of Services for detailed instructions on handling multiple-specimen testing.
Limitations
The test should not be conducted without administering a drug or other treatment after the first sample draw. The accuracy of the test can be compromised if specimens are not collected at the specified time points or if pre-test preparations are not followed. Non-EDTA plasma specimens, non-frozen samples, or non-separated samples can lead to rejection of samples. Gross icterus is also a cause for sample rejection. Turnaround time may be longer if confirmatory or reflex tests are necessary.
