Renin Activity
Also known as: RENIN
Use
Plasma renin activity measures enzyme ability to convert angiotensinogen to angiotensin I and is limited by the availability of angiotensinogen. It acts as an indicator, although not entirely accurate, of enzyme activity when angiotensinogen is decreased. This test is used in the context of diagnosing conditions related to abnormal renin levels such as primary aldosteronism.
Special Instructions
Collect midmorning after the patient has been sitting, standing, or walking for at least 2 hours and then seated for 5-15 minutes. Separate specimens must be submitted when multiple tests are ordered.
Limitations
Plasma renin activity is not an accurate indicator of enzyme activity when angiotensinogen is decreased. Storage at refrigerated temperatures may cause falsely elevated results. Do not collect in refrigerated tubes or in citrate, heparin, or oxalate. Hemolyzed specimens are also unacceptable.
