Stool Culture, Vibrio Only
Use
Isolate and identify Vibrio spp only
Special Instructions
Fecal specimens for different tests often require specific transport containers. Ensure specimens are portioned into the appropriate containers before sending to the lab. Only use a thumbnail-sized sample of stool in the C&S transport vial to maximize pathogen recovery. Overfilling may reduce pathogen recovery rates.
Limitations
A single stool specimen cannot conclusively rule out bacterial causes of diarrhea. Multiple specimens collected over different days are recommended to increase isolation probability. Results may be affected by improper specimen handling, such as overfilling the vial or incorrect transport conditions. Patients with nosocomial diarrhea should be tested for Clostridium difficile, as their symptoms are unlikely due to common enteric pathogens like Salmonella, Shigella, or EHEC.

Container
Stool culture transport vial (Para-Pak® orange)
Collection Instructions
Collect 1 to 2 g or 1 to 2 mL of stool in C&S transport vial. Overfilling reduces pathogen recovery. For hospitalized patients testing positive for nosocomial infections, consider testing for Clostridium difficile.
Storage Instructions
Maintain specimen at room temperature.
Causes for Rejection
Rejected if received in leaking container, diapers, dry, with fixative/additive, expired/incorrect container, delayed transport (>72h), inappropriate condition, or unlabeled.
