Cysticercus Antibody (IgG), ELISA, CSF
Also known as: Cysticercosis, Taenia saginata, Taenia solium, Tape Worm
Use
Cysticercosis is a tissue infection with larval (cysticerci) cysts of the pork tapeworm Taenia solium in which the patient serves as an intermediate host. The most common manifestation is neurocysticercosis, in which larvae invade the central nervous system and may lead to seizures or chronic meningitis. Cross-reactivity may occur with antibodies to other parasitic infections, particularly echinococcosis. Confirmation of positive ELISA findings by an IgG antibody Western blot is recommended.
Special Instructions
Not provided.
Limitations
Interpretation may be complicated by low antibody levels in CSF, passive transfer of antibodies from blood, or contamination via bloody taps. Cross-reactivity with other parasitic infections, particularly echinococcosis, may lead to false-positive results. Confirmation of positive results with IgG Western blot is advised.
