The presence of anti‑endomysial (EMA) IgA antibodies is highly specific for gluten‑sensitive enteropathy such as celiac disease and dermatitis herpetiformis. EMA‑IgA is detected primarily by immunofluorescence assay (IFA), using monkey esophagus substrate and observing fluorescence of the endomysial lining. It is considered among the most specific serological markers for celiac disease.
