HER‑2 IHC with Reflex to FISH
Also known as: HER2, Metastatic Cancer, Breast Carcinoma, Gastro-esophageal adenocarcinoma, Immunohistochemical Stain
Use
Determines HER‑2/neu protein overexpression on formalin‑fixed, paraffin‑embedded tumor tissue via immunohistochemistry. Equivocal (2+) results are reflexed to HER‑2 gene amplification assessment by fluorescence in situ hybridization for confirmation, which can guide eligibility for HER‑2‑targeted therapies.
Special Instructions
Reflex to FISH is performed only if IHC result is equivocal (2+) and incurs additional charge.
Limitations
Reliability depends on proper fixation: tissue must be fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin for 6–72 hours and submitted with accompanying pathology report. Non‑invasive tumors are rejected.
