Herpesvirus 6 Antibody (IgM)
Use
This serologic test for HHV‑6 IgM antibodies is intended to identify recent primary infection, reactivation, or reinfection of human herpesvirus‑6 (HHV‑6), particularly useful in immunocompromised individuals or infants presenting with clinical features consistent with roseola or neurological involvement.
Special Instructions
Orderable test code is 34153. Specimen must be serum collected in a red‑top (no additive) tube. Transport refrigerated and follow stability guidelines. Ensure proper separation of serum before shipping.
Limitations
IgM serology may not differentiate between HHV‑6 subtypes and can yield false positive or cross‑reactive results. Serology may not reflect active infection—PCR testing may be preferred in suspected active disease. IgM may disappear early or reappear during reactivation; interpret in clinical context.
