HLA DQB1*06:02 Narcolepsy Association with Reflex to HLA DQB1 Typing
Use
The HLA‑DQB1*06:02 allele is strongly associated with narcolepsy, a neurological condition involving excessive daytime sleepiness, cataplexy, and other sleep disturbances; however, its presence alone is not diagnostic and must be interpreted alongside clinical history and sleep studies. Quest Diagnostics has discontinued this test (Effective Date: December 16, 2024) and now recommends the equivalent test code 12342‑HLA‑DQ Typing for Narcolepsy as the replacement. The allele DQB1*0602 is more sensitive for narcolepsy than DRB1*15 across ethnic groups, especially in patients with cataplexy. It was notably more frequent in those with cataplexy (76.1%) than without (40.9%).
