Smooth muscle antibodies are detected in approximately 85% of patients with chronic active hepatitis and in less than 50% of patients with primary biliary cirrhosis. They are usually negative in extrahepatic biliary obstruction, drug‑induced liver disease, viral hepatitis, and hepatoma.
