17-Hydroxypregnenolone 90-Minute Timed Specimen
Also known as: OHPRGN 90
Use
The 17-Hydroxypregnenolone 90-Minute Timed Specimen test measures the level of 17-Hydroxypregnenolone in the patient's serum or plasma. This test is used in the evaluation of adrenal function and is particularly useful for diagnosing disorders like congenital adrenal hyperplasia, which involves defects in the steroid synthesis pathway. The test may also assist in the differential diagnosis of hyperandrogenism and in monitoring steroid replacement therapy or other interventions.
Special Instructions
The specimen must be collected in a serum separator tube, or alternatively, in a plain red, lavender (EDTA), pink (K2EDTA), or green (sodium or lithium heparin) tube. After collection, serum or plasma should be separated from cells as soon as possible and frozen immediately to ensure specimen stability. It is critical to handle this specimen correctly to maintain its integrity, especially since it is sensitive to temperature; thus, multiple tests require separate specimens.
Limitations
This laboratory-developed test has not been cleared or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration and is for clinical purposes performed in a CLIA certified laboratory. It is crucial to note that the test's performance characteristics were determined by ARUP Laboratories. Incorrect specimen handling, such as failing to separate serum from cells timely or inappropriate storage conditions, may compromise results. Analytical interference or cross-reactivity with other steroids may also affect the accuracy of the test.
