17-Hydroxypregnenolone, Mass Spectrometry (Endocrine Sciences)
Use
17-Hydroxypregnenolone is a precursor steroid hormone involved in the biosynthesis of other steroid hormones. It is produced from pregnenolone through enzymatic conversion mediated by 17-α-hydroxylase. This compound is significant in the pathway leading to the formation of glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, estrogens, and androgens. Measuring levels of 17-hydroxypregnenolone can provide insight into adrenal and gonadal function and is useful in the evaluation of congenital adrenal hyperplasia and other disorders of steroidogenesis. The levels can vary depending on physiological conditions such as ACTH stimulation or dexamethasone suppression.
Special Instructions
For optimal turnaround time, submit separate frozen specimens for each test ordered if multiple tests are requested. Utilize LabCorp PP transpak frozen purple tube, part number 49482, for optimal handling and freezing of samples. Ensure samples are frozen to avoid delays.
Limitations
The test does not account for variations in 17-hydroxypregnenolone levels that can occur with different physiological states such as stress, pregnancy, or during specific phases of the menstrual cycle. Results should be correlated with clinical findings and other laboratory tests for accurate interpretation. The presence of hemolysis in specimens may impact the accuracy of the results, and non-serum or non-EDTA plasma specimens will be rejected.
