Pregnenolone, LC/MS/MS
Use
This test measures levels of pregnenolone, a precursor steroid produced by the adrenal glands and gonads, to help assess adrenal function, hormone balance, and possible endocrine disorders. It is used in evaluating conditions such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia, adrenal insufficiency, polycystic ovary syndrome, infertility, and general hormone imbalance.
Special Instructions
No special preparation required; fasting is not required. Best taken in a rested state. Specimen: serum; collect in a red‑top tube, allow clotting and separate serum. Specimen must be frozen for transport.
Limitations
Not explicitly stated; typical limitations of LC‑MS/MS assays may include potential interference from hemolysis, lipemia, or icterus; insufficient volume or improper handling may result in rejection or invalid result.
