Acid Fast Stain, Partial or Modified (for Nocardia spp.)
Also known as: MS PAFS
Use
The Acid Fast Stain, Partial or Modified, is used to detect aerobic actinomycetes, such as Nocardia and Gordonia species, in clinical specimens. This test provides a presumptive identification of some actinomycetes that are partially acid-fast, assisting in the diagnosis of infections caused by these organisms.
Special Instructions
The test requires specific specimen types including aspirate, fluid, respiratory specimen, or tissue. Proper specimen handling and transport in a sterile container are crucial to ensure accurate results.
Limitations
This test provides only presumptive identification of partially acid-fast actinomycetes and does not provide species-level identification. Further confirmatory testing may be required for definitive diagnosis. Stability is limited to 72 hours at room temperature or refrigerated.
