Alpha Subunit, Free, Pituitary Glycoprotein Hormones (PGH)
Also known as: A SUB PGH
Use
The Alpha Subunit, Free, Pituitary Glycoprotein Hormones (PGH) test is used primarily for monitoring certain pituitary tumors. These tumors can cause abnormal secretion of glycoprotein hormones, which include luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). Measuring the free alpha subunit can help in the diagnosis and monitoring of conditions influencing these hormones, particularly in distinguishing pituitary adenomas from other types of tumors and conditions. Elevated levels of this subunit can also be noted in patients with non-functioning pituitary adenomas or other endocrine disorders.
Special Instructions
Ensure specimen separation from cells as soon as possible or within two hours of collection. If multiple tests are ordered, separate specimens must be submitted as the test is not performed at ARUP Laboratories.
Limitations
This assay was developed and its analytical performance characteristics were determined by Labcorp. It has not been cleared or approved by the FDA. Interpretation of results should be done in conjunction with patient's medical history, clinical examination, and other findings. The test results should not stand alone for diagnosis; discrepancies in the clinical context should prompt further investigation and consultation with the laboratory.
