Arsenic, Random Urine with Reflex to Fractionated
Also known as: U ARS RAND
Use
This test is used for the assessment of acute or chronic arsenic exposure, differentiating between toxic inorganic and methylated species as well as benign organic forms. It is particularly useful for monitoring occupational exposure or evaluating potential poisoning in patients. For specimens with elevated total arsenic results, fractionation is automatically performed to determine the proportions of inorganic, methylated, and organic species.
Special Instructions
Patients should avoid nutritional supplements, vitamins, minerals, nonessential medications, and seafood for 48 to 72 hours prior to specimen collection. High iodine concentrations may interfere with testing. Avoid urine collection 72 hours after iodinated/gadolinium-based contrast exposure, and 14 days for patients with impaired kidney function after such media exposure.
Limitations
The test may yield falsely elevated results due to skin or collection-related contamination. Elevated arsenic results due to contamination should be confirmed with a second specimen collected in a certified trace element-free container. Certain medications, supplements, or dietary habits may also affect the test results.
